How the Atelier learns your taste

It doesn't guess, and it doesn't hand you a questionnaire. Here's what actually happens in the first two weeks on your counter — and why the cup keeps getting better.

The Atelier, two weeks in — quietly learning.

There's a moment, usually around day ten, when people email us to say the coffee "just got better" — as if the machine had a good night's sleep. It didn't. It was paying attention. The Atelier spends its first fortnight doing something closer to listening than calculating, and once you know what it's listening for, the whole thing feels a lot less like magic and a lot more like craft.

It starts with the senses

Every shot the Atelier pulls is measured — not just poured. Flow rate, temperature at the group head, the pressure curve, how quickly the puck resists. On its own, none of that means much. But held against the thousands of shots it already knows, each one becomes a small data point about the beans in your hopper and the water in your pipes.

This is why it never asks you to "dial in." It's reading conditions you'd otherwise have to guess at, and adjusting before the next cup rather than after a ruined one.

A good extraction has a shape. The Atelier watches for it every time.

Then it builds a taste profile

Every time you tweak — a little stronger, a touch less bitter, more milk — the Atelier folds that into what we call your Flavour DNA. It isn't a single setting; it's a shape across body, acidity, sweetness, and strength that quietly firms up over your first week.

The best machine isn't the one with the most buttons. It's the one you stop needing to think about.

And it reads the room

With your permission, the Atelier looks at the day ahead — an early start, a packed calendar, a slow Sunday — and paces itself accordingly. A stronger first cup before a 7am flight; a gentler decaf as the evening winds down. You can turn every bit of this off; most people leave it on within a week.

The short version

None of this replaces the pleasure of making coffee by hand — plenty of us still do. But on the mornings you can't, it's a quiet reassurance that the cup will be right anyway. That's the whole idea: less thinking, more drinking well.
